The Prayer of the Apostle Paul | A Gnostic Prayer from Nag Hammadi
October 04, 2026About this film or conversation
What does a Gnostic prayer attributed to the Apostle Paul actually say? The Prayer of the Apostle Paul is a short early Christian text preserved at the beginning of Nag Hammadi Codex I, also known as the Jung Codex. Its surviving manuscript opens with several lines missing, then launches into an invocation of the Redeemer filled with distinctly Gnostic language: mind, fullness, spiritual ascent, the Pleroma, and knowledge of realities beyond the powers of the lower world.
In this installment of *ARCANA GNOSTICA* we enter the world of this remarkable ancient prayer and explore the ideas contained within it, its relationship to the Gnostic tradition, and the spiritual cosmology behind its language.
The text invokes Christ as Redeemer while asking for illumination, healing, spiritual authority and revelation of the First-born of the Pleroma of grace. Its language also echoes Pauline writings while moving unmistakably into the vocabulary of the Gnostic world. Gnosis
